Gulf of Tonkin Incident - The Gulf of Tonkin Incident was a pair of alleged attacks by North Vietnamese gunboats on two American destroyers, the USS Maddox and the USS C. Turner Joy, in August of 1964 in the Gulf of Tonkin.
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution - Following the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, Lyndon Johnson, who was up for election that year, launched retaliatory strikes and went on national television on August 4, 1964. Although the USS Maddox (DD-731) had been involved in providing intelligence support for South Vietnamese attacks at Hon Me and Hon Ngu, Johnson's Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, went before Congress and denied that the United States Navy was supporting South Vietnamese military operations.
Operation Pierce Arrow - In response to the Gulf of Tonkin Incident when USS Maddox was attacked by North Vietnamese patrol boats once on August 2 1964 and allegedly again on August 4 as it gathered electronic intelligence while in the international waters of the Gulf of Tonkin, American President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered Operation "Pierce Arrow" which was conducted on August 5.
