Gulf of Tonkin Incident - The Gulf of Tonkin Incident was a pair of alleged attacks by North Vietnamese gunboats on two American destroyers, the USS Maddox and the USS C. Turner Joy, in August of 1964 in the Gulf of Tonkin.
Gulf of Tonkin - The Gulf of Tonkin (Vietnamese: Vịnh Bắc Bộ; ), measuring approximately 480 km by 240 km, lies between Vietnam and China. Notably shallow (less than 60 meters deep), it is the northwest arm of the South China Sea- itself a branch of the Pacific Ocean.
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution - Following the Gulf of Tonkin Incident, Lyndon Johnson, who was up for election that year, launched retaliatory strikes and went on national television on August 4, 1964. Although the USS Maddox (DD-731) had been involved in providing intelligence support for South Vietnamese attacks at Hon Me and Hon Ngu, Johnson's Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, went before Congress and denied that the United States Navy was supporting South Vietnamese military operations.
Tonkin - Tonkin, also spelled Tongkin or Tongking, is the northernmost part of Vietnam, south of China's Yunnan and Guangxi Provinces, east of northern Laos, and west of the Gulf of Tonkin. Locally, it is known as Bắc Kỳ, meaning "Northern Region".
